The 2024 D&D core books represent the first major revision to the 5th Edition rules since 2014. If you're new to D&D, these are the books you buy. If you've been playing 5e for years, this guide covers what has actually changed and whether the new editions are worth purchasing. All three core books are currently available on Amazon AU.
The three 2024 D&D core books are the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual. New players need the Player's Handbook first — it covers everything required to create a character and play the game. The Dungeon Master's Guide is for whoever runs the game. The Monster Manual is for DMs building their own encounters. All three are revised and updated from the 2014 versions. They are backwards compatible with older 5e content.
The 2024 Player's Handbook
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is the core rulebook for players. It covers:
- How the game works: ability scores, proficiency, advantage and disadvantage, saving throws, skills
- All twelve character classes with full level 1 to 20 progression
- Species (formerly called races): options for character backgrounds
- Backgrounds: now more mechanically significant in 2024, granting ability score increases and features
- Equipment and weapons
- Spells: the complete spell list for all spellcasting classes
- The combat rules
Who needs it: Every player who wants to build and run a character. In a group of five, ideally multiple people have access to a copy. The DM also benefits from owning one.
2024 changes worth knowing about for returning players: The class designs have been streamlined. Several subclasses have been reworked. The background system now contributes ability score increases rather than the point-buy system being entirely separate. The spell lists have been adjusted. If you've been playing 5e since 2014, the game is recognisably the same but there are meaningful differences in specific mechanics worth reviewing.
The 2024 PHB is available in standard hardcover. An alternate cover version also exists.
The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide
The Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) is for the person running the game. It covers:
- How to structure and run a campaign
- World-building tools and frameworks
- Encounter design and encounter balancing
- Magic item tables and item descriptions
- Rules for handling unusual situations
- Advice on managing a table of players
Who needs it: The Dungeon Master. Players don't need the DMG to play the game. A DM running a published adventure (rather than building their own) can get through many sessions without the DMG, using the adventure book as a guide. It becomes essential when a DM starts designing their own content.
2024 changes: The 2024 DMG has been significantly reorganised compared to the 2014 version. The structure is clearer and more useful as a practical reference. Returning DMs who felt the old DMG was disorganised may find the new version considerably more useful.
The 2024 DMG is available in standard hardcover. An older 2014 edition is also still available if price is a consideration — the 2014 version covers the same core DMG material, just with the older structure.
The 2024 Monster Manual
The Monster Manual (MM) gives the DM a complete reference of creature stat blocks. It covers:
- Hundreds of creatures, from low-level goblins and kobolds to high-level dragons, demons, and legendary monsters
- Stat blocks including challenge rating, hit points, armour class, attacks, and special abilities
- Lore descriptions for each creature type
Who needs it: The Dungeon Master, specifically once they are building their own encounters rather than following a pre-written adventure. Published adventure books include the stat blocks for the specific creatures in that adventure, so you don't need the full Monster Manual just to run Curse of Strahd or Icewind Dale.
2024 changes: The 2024 Monster Manual includes updated stat blocks, new creatures, and revised challenge ratings for many existing monsters. The formatting is cleaner. If you own the 2014 Monster Manual and primarily use published adventures, upgrading is not urgent.
The Older 2014 Editions
The original 2014 Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual are still available on Amazon AU, typically at lower prices than the 2024 editions. The 2024 and 2014 versions are broadly backwards compatible — you can mix and match, run published adventures from either era, and use older supplements with the new core books.
If you're on a strict budget or primarily plan to run published adventures using pre-written content, the 2014 editions work fine. The 2024 editions are the current standard and include revisions that experienced players generally find meaningful.
Supplemental Books Worth Knowing About
Beyond the three core books, two supplemental rulebooks are widely used in 5e games:
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything: Adds additional subclasses, optional class features, new spells, and expanded rules options. Useful once you're comfortable with the core game and want more options.
Xanathar's Guide to Everything: Similar in scope — additional subclasses, more spells, and expanded rules for thieves' tools, downtime activities, and other systems. Also useful once you have the core books.
Both are available through the C3 D&D shop and are included in the Rules Expansion Gift Set bundle.
Companion Books and Accessories
Several companion books extend the core rules into specific settings and lore areas: Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse (additional creature stat blocks), Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants (giant-focused player options and encounters), Fizban's Treasury of Dragons (dragon-focused content), and Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (Forgotten Realms setting detail). These are for groups who want depth in specific areas, not essential purchases.
All core books and supplements mentioned here are available through the C3 D&D shop with confirmed Amazon AU availability and local shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need all three core books to play D&D? No. New players need the Player's Handbook. The DM benefits from the Dungeon Master's Guide, but can manage early sessions with a starter set or published adventure in place of it. The Monster Manual is optional for DMs running published adventures.
Should I buy the 2024 or 2014 Player's Handbook? If you're new to D&D, buy the 2024 edition — it's the current standard and the version most new content is written around. If you already own the 2014 PHB and have an active group, upgrading is useful but not urgent.
Are the 2024 D&D books compatible with older 5e content? Broadly yes. The 2024 books are backwards compatible with 5e supplements, adventures, and content. There are minor rule differences but nothing that prevents using older material.
What is the cheapest way to access D&D rules in Australia? Wizards of the Coast provides a free Basic Rules PDF covering enough to play. D&D Beyond (the official digital platform) offers free access to the basic rules and paid access to the full books. Physical books are available from Amazon AU with local shipping.
Does every player need their own copy of the Player's Handbook? Not strictly. A group can share one physical copy, though it slows things down when multiple people need to look something up at once. D&D Beyond allows digital access on multiple devices.
Which supplemental books should I buy after the core three? Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything are the most broadly useful supplements, adding more options to the base game. After those, buy settings or campaign books based on which adventure you're planning to run.
