- Traditional Foil: approximately 1 in 5 packs (any rarity)
- Foil Rare or Mythic: approximately 1 in 14 packs within the foil slot
- Special Treatment / Bonus Slot: varies significantly by set (1 in 5 to 1 in 8 packs)

Input 2: Average Card Values by Rarity
This is where Australian players need to pay close attention.
Most EV guides use TCGPlayer prices — a USD-denominated US marketplace. These prices differ from what Australian players actually pay on eBay AU for several reasons:
Currency conversion. USD to AUD conversion adds approximately 50-55 percent to the USD price at current rates.
Import premium. Cards shipped from the US to Australia incur postage costs that inflate the effective per-card cost. Australian buyers often pay more than the USD converted price to avoid these shipping costs.
Local demand differences. Some cards are more or less popular in Australia than in the US, creating divergent local pricing. A card that is a Standard staple in the US may be less demanded in Australia due to different tournament scene sizes.

Mythic Rare average value: The weighted average across all mythics in the set, accounting for the wide spread between chase mythics (AU$20-80+) and bulk mythics (AU$3-6). This is not the price of the best mythic — it is the average across all mythics weighted by how many of each exist in the set.
Rare average value: Similarly weighted. Most sets have 60-80 rares. A handful are worth AU$5-15+, most are AU$0.50-3.00. The weighted average for a typical standard set is AU$1.50-3.00 per rare.
Foil premium: Foil versions of rares and mythics command premiums over non-foil. The foil multiplier varies by card — some foils are worth 2-5x the non-foil price, others barely more. The calculator uses conservative foil premium estimates rather than peak foil prices.
Bonus slot average: Sets with Mystical Archive, Enchanting Tales, Multiverse Legends, Retro Artifacts, or other bonus sheets have an additional EV component from that slot. The bonus slot average is calculated across the full bonus sheet, weighted by pull rate and market value.
A Worked Example: Standard 36-Pack Play Booster Box at AU$180
Using approximate values for a typical 2024 standard set:

Why EV Is Always an Average
The calculation above gives you the mathematical expectation. In practice, you will not open exactly 4.5 mythics. You will open 3 or 7 or 2. The expected value is what you would average across thousands of box openings.
This means:
Your individual result will differ from EV. Opening a box that has AU$240 EV gives you a statistical expectation of AU$240 in cards — not a guarantee. You might pull AU$120 or AU$380. The more boxes you open, the closer your average result gets to the EV.
EV is a long-run average, not a prediction. Use it to assess whether a product is reasonably priced for the opening experience, not to predict what your specific box will contain.
High-EV sets still produce disappointing boxes. The variance in MTG booster opening is enormous. Even Modern Horizons 2 (one of the highest EV products ever printed) produces occasional boxes with no valuable pulls. EV reflects the statistical average, not the minimum.
When to Distrust an EV Calculation
EV calculations break down in several scenarios:
Prices change after calculation. A set's secondary market prices shift over time. An EV calculated at release may be significantly different from EV six months later. Always use current market data.
Bonus slot distributions are uneven. Sets with bonus sheets (Mystical Archive, Enchanting Tales, etc.) have wide spread between the most and least valuable cards in the bonus sheet. If the bonus sheet average is pulled upward by one extremely valuable card (Force of Will, Sylvan Library) but that card appears at low frequency, the average can overstate typical results.
Very new sets have volatile pricing. In the first two to four weeks after release, card prices shift rapidly as players evaluate what is playable. EV calculations using early release prices may not reflect settled market values.
Small sample pull rate data. For some products, pull rate data is estimated from community opening records rather than official Wizards data. These estimates can be off, particularly for very rare treatments like serialised cards.
