The One Piece Card Game launched in 2022 and grew faster than almost any TCG in recent memory. It has a distinctive mechanic. DON!! tokens. that makes it feel different from other card games once you understand how it works.
This guide covers everything you need to play your first game.
The Goal
Win by reducing your opponent's Life Cards to zero and then hitting them with an attack they cannot block.
Each player starts with a set of Life Cards (typically 4 or 5, depending on your Leader). Attacks that your opponent can't counter send those Life Cards to their hand. When the Life Cards run out, one final unblocked attack wins the game.
What You Need
Two players. Two 50-card decks. A DON!! deck of 10 cards per player. A Leader Card for each player.
Starter Decks are the entry point: each comes with a 50-card deck, 10 DON!! cards, and a Leader. They're available at local game stores and online in Australia for around AU$20 to AU$30.
Key Card Types
Leader Card: Your captain. It stays in play the entire game, has its own power, and often has a special ability. Your Leader determines how many Life Cards you start with.
Character Cards: Crew members you play to attack and block.
Event Cards: One-time effects. Some are played as Counter cards (to block attacks), others trigger from hand or the field.
Stage Cards: Locations that give ongoing effects to your side.
DON!! Cards: The resource system. You have a separate DON!! deck of 10 identical cards.
DON!!. The Resource System
At the start of each turn (starting from Turn 2), you add 2 DON!! cards from your DON!! deck to your field, rested (horizontal). You can then attach these to your characters or Leader to power them up, or use them to play cards.
This is the core mechanic. DON!! attached to a character increases its power. DON!! spent on card costs are returned from the field at the end of the turn.
How a Turn Works
- Draw a card
- Add 2 DON!! from your DON!! deck to your field (rested)
- Main Phase: Play characters and stages, attach DON!! to characters and Leader, activate effects
- Attack Phase: Declare attacks with your characters and Leader
- End of Turn: Return all active DON!! on your Leader and characters to your field as active (upright)
How Attacking Works
Declare one of your characters (or your Leader) as the attacker. The attack has a power value: the character's base power plus any DON!! attached.
Your opponent then decides whether to block. They can use characters and Leaders to counter the attack (using their Counter value), or play Event cards with Counter effects.
If the defending player can't or doesn't defend to match the attack power, the attack hits. If the target was the opponent's Leader and they have Life Cards remaining, the top Life Card goes to their hand instead of taking damage. When Life Cards are gone, a successful attack on the Leader wins the game.
Power and Counter Values
Every character has a Power value (how strong its attacks are) and most have a Counter value (how much it adds when used as a blocker). Event cards can also have Counter values.

The Counter Mechanic in Detail
Countering is what separates experienced One Piece players from beginners. When your opponent attacks, you can play cards from your hand as counters. Each counter card adds its Counter value (shown in the bottom-left) to your defending character's Power for the duration of that attack.
Cards with 2000 Counter add 2000 Power. Cards with 1000 Counter add 1000 Power. Some cards have no Counter value and cannot be used this way.
Key rule: you can play multiple counter cards in one attack. Stack counters until your character's Power exceeds the attacking card's Power to negate the attack entirely.
Managing your hand for counters while still being able to play cards on your turn is the central skill of One Piece TCG.
What Life Cards Are and Why Losing Them Can Be Good
Your Life cards (5 of them at the start) sit face-down in your Life area. When you take a hit that isn't blocked, you don't lose health points: you take the top Life card and add it to your hand.
This is significant: going down to 2 Life means you've added 3 cards to your hand from your Life area. More cards means more counter options and more plays. Some decks deliberately take early damage to fuel their hand.
When your Life area is empty, the next unblocked hit ends the game.
Rush Characters and Blocker Characters
Rush: This keyword lets a Character attack on the same turn it's played. Normally characters have summoning sickness and can't attack the turn they arrive. Rush breaks that rule. Rush Characters are valuable for surprise lethal attacks.
Blocker: A Blocker Character can be activated in defence to take an attack that was aimed at your Leader. You tap the Blocker (rest it, turn it sideways) and redirect the attack to it. Blockers are one of the best defensive tools in the game.
Building Your First One Piece Deck
Starter Decks built around specific Leaders are the recommended starting point. Each Starter Deck is 51 cards including the Leader, is legal for play straight away, and is themed around a character from the One Piece universe.
The format is 50 cards plus one Leader. Up to 4 copies of any card. Colour restrictions apply based on your Leader's colour(s).
After a Starter Deck, the most efficient improvement is buying singles for specific 4-of cards your deck strategy needs. One Piece singles on Australian eBay are priced lower than many other TCGs for most non-chase cards.
