Pokemon Mega Evolution Pitch Black releases in Australia on 17 July 2026. It is the most significant Pokemon TCG release of the July window and one of the most anticipated sets of 2026 among Australian players. Mega Evolution returning to the competitive format after years of absence is a big deal, and Pitch Black is the first instalment of the Mega Evolution era under the Scarlet and Violet framework.

This guide covers what you need to know before the release, including expected product types, price ranges, Prime Day timing, and where to buy. Quick Facts: Pokemon Mega Evolution Pitch Black

  • Release date (Australia): 17 July 2026
  • Set series: Scarlet and Violet (SV era, Mega Evolution sub-series)
  • Prime Day: Ends 13 July, four days before Pitch Black releases
  • Next release: Pokemon Mega Evolution 30th Celebration, 16 September 2026

Why Mega Evolution Pitch Black Matters

Mega Evolution has been absent from the Standard competitive format since the transition from the XY era to the Sun and Moon era in the mid-2010s. Its return under the SV framework is a genuine event for the Pokemon TCG community, not just a marketing exercise. Mega Evolution Pokemon have historically been among the most powerful and most collectible cards in the game's history, with original mega cards like Mega Charizard EX, Mega Blastoise EX, and Mega Mewtwo EX still holding collector value today.

Pitch Black appears to be the first of at least two Mega Evolution sets in 2026, with the 30th Celebration set following in September. The two-set approach means the Mega Evolution era is being given room to breathe in the meta rather than being a single-set gimmick.

For collectors, the return of Mega Evolution means new chase cards featuring iconic Mega Pokemon. Expect the usual assortment of full arts, special illustration rares, and hyper rares featuring Mega forms of popular Pokemon. These will be the high-value pulls from Pitch Black booster boxes.

Does Prime Day Affect Pitch Black?

Prime Day ends on 13 July. Pitch Black releases on 17 July, four days later. The two events do not overlap.

However, there are two ways Prime Day is relevant to Pitch Black buyers:

1. Buy other Pokemon products during Prime Day, save your Pitch Black budget for 17 July. If you want to pick up a booster box from an earlier SV set at a Prime Day discount, do that during 7 to 13 July and then buy Pitch Black at regular retail on 17 July. This is the best way to use Prime Day if Pitch Black is already your primary target.

2. Check for a preorder deal on Amazon AU during Prime Day. Amazon AU occasionally lists upcoming product with a preorder at a promotional price. Check the Pitch Black listing on Amazon AU from 7 July. If a preorder deal appears during Prime Day, lock it in. If not, buy at launch on 17 July.

Expected Product Types and Price Ranges

Based on the standard Scarlet and Violet release structure, Pitch Black is expected to include the following product types at these approximate retail prices. Exact pricing will be confirmed closer to the release date:

Given the significance of the Mega Evolution return, demand for Pitch Black at launch is likely to be high. If you want a booster box, consider preordering from Amazon AU or your local game store before 17 July to ensure stock. Launch-day sellouts on popular sets do happen in Australia.

Singles Strategy for Pitch Black

Pitch Black will have key chase cards, almost certainly including Mega forms of the most popular Pokemon. Here is the standard advice for buying singles from a new Pokemon set:

For Australian singles, the C3 eBay store will have Pitch Black pulls listed from launch weekend.

Best value pick: Pokemon Mega Evolution Pitch Black Elite Trainer Box If you want to experience Pitch Black without committing to a full booster box, an Elite Trainer Box at AU$75 to AU$90 is the right entry point. You get 9 booster packs, sleeves, dice, and a promo card, all with Mega Evolution theming. For casual players and collectors who want to crack some packs and see what they pull, an ETB is better value per pack than individual packs, and far less risk than a full booster box.

What Comes After Pitch Black?

Pokemon Mega Evolution 30th Celebration follows on 16 September 2026. This is the premium celebration set in the Mega Evolution sub-series, likely to feature enhanced card treatments, retrospective artwork, and high collector value. The 30th Celebration timing also suggests the set will feature a broader range of iconic Mega Evolution Pokemon beyond whatever Pitch Black includes as its anchor.
