Quick Answer

Star Wars Unlimited uses six main rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary, and Showcase, plus the Hyperspace foil variants that appear across multiple rarities. Showcase cards are the premium collector tier. For current AUD prices across all rarities, check /cards/starwars.

The Star Wars Unlimited Rarity Tiers

Common (C) cards appear several times per pack. Commons include low-cost units, basic upgrades, and fundamental events. Most commons have low secondary market value unless they see broad competitive play.

Uncommon (U) cards appear multiple times per pack and include more powerful units and events. Competitively relevant uncommons trade at AU$2 to AU$15.

Rare (R) cards appear approximately once per pack. These are powerful competitive cards across both light and dark side decks. Value ranges from under AU$5 to AU$40 depending on competitive demand.

Legendary (L) cards are the non-premium high-rarity tier. Legendary units and events in SWU represent the most powerful individual cards for specific strategies. They appear approximately once every two to three packs. Values range from AU$10 to AU$60 for current meta-relevant Legendaries.

Special (S) cards are unique to specific SWU products. These are bonus cards outside the standard rarity structure, often featuring unique artwork or alternate versions of standard cards.

Leaders are a unique SWU card type that does not appear in standard booster packs. Each deck starts with a Leader card that defines your strategy. Standard Leaders come from Starter Sets and specific products. The Leader mechanic makes these cards essential but separately distributed from booster pull rates.

Hyperspace Foil Variants

Hyperspace is a foil treatment applied to select cards in each SWU set. These are foil versions with a unique shimmer pattern that appears across multiple rarities, from Uncommon up to Showcase. A Hyperspace Common is a foil Common with this specific treatment.

The most sought Hyperspace versions are of Leaders and Legendaries with competitive demand. Hyperspace versions pull at lower rates than standard versions and command premiums accordingly.

Hyperspace versions of competitive Leaders represent the highest Hyperspace value tier, typically trading at AU$30 to AU$150 or more for the most dominant current Leaders.

Showcase Cards

Showcase is SWU's premium collector tier. These are alternate art versions of specific Legendaries and Leaders, featuring extended artwork that goes beyond the standard card borders. Showcase cards appear approximately once per booster box on average.

Showcase Leaders are the most valuable showcase cards because Leaders are seen in every game played with that deck. The combination of competitive demand and visual premium makes Showcase Leaders the ceiling of the standard SWU secondary market.

Showcase Bases (the home base cards unique to SWU) also trade as collector items. The game's unique Base mechanic means these cards are on the table for every game, making their visual design particularly prominent.

Reading SWU Card Rarity

Rarity indicators appear in the lower portion of each card alongside the set symbol and card number. Visual treatment is the fastest indicator: no foil is Common or Uncommon. Standard holofoil is Rare or Legendary. The Hyperspace shimmer pattern indicates a Hyperspace foil of whatever rarity. Extended artwork beyond the card border indicates Showcase.

Token Cards and Their Role

Star Wars Unlimited uses Token cards for various unit and resource effects. Standard Tokens have no secondary market value, but alternate art Token cards released through promotional channels and special products have collector demand.

Promotional Tokens from game store events and tournament support feature unique artwork and can trade at meaningful prices among collectors who want complete thematic sets.

Starter Set-exclusive content in SWU sometimes includes non-standard versions of Leader or Base cards that differ from their booster pack counterparts. These are minor collector items but worth noting for complete set collectors.

Leaders vs Non-Leader Cards: A Structural Distinction

The most important structural distinction in SWU rarity is between Leaders and non-Leader cards. Leaders are not pulled from standard booster packs at all. They come from Starter Sets, Two-Player Starter Sets, and occasionally premium products.

This means the supply of any specific Leader card is determined by the production run of the product it came in, not by the booster pack distribution model. When a Starter Set sells out and goes out of print, the Leaders it contained become relatively scarce in the secondary market. This has happened with early SWU Starter Set releases, driving up the secondary market prices of those specific Leaders.

Collectors who recognise this distinction and acquire Starter Set Leaders in NM condition from newly released products are positioning well before those Leaders potentially become scarcer.

The C3 Take

Star Wars Unlimited's rarity system is well-designed for both competitive players and collectors. The Showcase tier is accessible enough that Australian players can reasonably target specific Showcase cards without it feeling prohibitively expensive, while the Hyperspace foil variants provide a premium tier across multiple rarities for collectors who want foil versions of specific cards they play. The game's transparent pull rates and clean product structure make it one of the more honest TCG purchases in the current market.
